Cooperative economics for DC
We are the Economy
A grassroots coalition of cooperatives, small businesses, nonprofits, organizers, and neighbors building shared ownership, locally rooted wealth, and an economic development strategy that invests in people in Washington, DC, not just corporations.
What is Community Wealth Building?
For too long, DC's economic development strategy has focused on corporate incentives as the only path to “economic growth.” When all the money, power, and investment go toward trying to “attract and retain” wealth, it becomes harder and harder for the communities that built this city to afford to stay here. Community Wealth Building (CWB) starts from a different question: who owns the assets, who makes the decisions, and where do the returns go?
CWB is an economic development strategy that invests in cooperative and worker ownership, permanently affordable housing, local financial infrastructure, local procurement, and democratic control. Instead of only chasing outside corporations with tax breaks, DC can create jobs and grow the economy by investing in people and businesses that are rooted here.
Who We Are
DC Community Wealth Builders (DC CWB) is a coalition of cooperatives, small businesses, nonprofits, organizers, and neighbors dedicated to building shared wealth and fostering trust in DC's low-wealth, Black, and brown communities.
Our role is to support the ecosystem itself, educate about this as a new form of economic development and problem solving, and build the public power needed to win durable support.
Community wealth building is not charity or one-off subsidies. It is building shared ownership, trust, and power.
